December 15, 2010 (MMD Newswire) — The City of Tampa, Florida, declared December 5th-11th, “International Walk for Human Rights Week” joining countries around the world as the tens of thousands of people walk for human rights to celebrate United Nations Human Rights Day. The Tampa walk took place on Saturday, December 11, at Capaz Park. The walk was co-sponsored by Youth for Human Rights Florida, Church of Scientology of Tampa, Capaz Area Neighborhood Watch and Momento Deportivo ESPN 1550AM Radio. After the walk people celebrated in the park with entertainment by singer/songwriter Dustin McGahee and rock band WD-HAN.

Human Rights Day was created to acknowledge the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was written after World War II so the horrors of that war would never happen again. The United Nations theme for Human Rights Day 2010 is “Human Rights Defenders Who Act To End Discrimination” with the message of “Speak Up – Stop Discrimination”.

“The ‘International Walk for Human Rights’ is a way to speak up to end discrimination on a large scale, because the first thing needed to end discrimination is an understanding of our rights, and to respect the rights of others,” said Dustin McGahee, President of Youth For Human Rights Florida.

Youth are doing just that with walks in countries such as Austria, Belgium, Cameroon, Canada, Columbia, Denmark, France, Germany, Holland, India, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Mali, Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, Russia, Scotland, Slovakia, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, Ukraine, United States of America, and Zambia. In some countries several groups will be walking in different areas of the country.

Youth for Human Rights Florida is a secular, non-profit organization with the mission to educate about Human Rights both in and out of the classroom. The uniqueness of the program lies in the educational materials, which includes a simple to understand DVD explaining the 30 Human Rights, created in collaboration with the Human Rights Department of the Church of Scientology International.
